Markdown Table Generator

Type into the grid, set alignment, copy the Markdown — or paste cells from a spreadsheet

Want to see the table rendered? Drop the .md file into the free online viewer, or open it straight from Finder with MDViewer for Mac — tables, code highlighting and Mermaid diagrams included.

How to Create a Markdown Table

  1. Type column names in the first row — it becomes the table header.
  2. Fill in the cells. Press Tab to move right and Enter to move down; a new row is added when you press Enter on the last one.
  3. Pick an alignment for each column from the menu above it.
  4. Copy the Markdown or download it as a .md file.

Already have the data in a spreadsheet? Copy the cells in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, click a cell in the grid and paste. For whole files, use the CSV or Excel converter.

Markdown Table Syntax

A Markdown table is a header row, a separator row of dashes, and data rows, with cells divided by pipes:

| Feature | Free | Pro |
| :------ | :--: | --: |
| Viewer | Yes | Yes |
| Editing | No | Yes |

Colons in the separator row set alignment: :--- left, :---: center, ---: right. The padding spaces are optional — they only make the source easier to read. See the Markdown table guide for more.

FAQ

How do I align a column in a Markdown table?
Add colons to the separator row: :--- aligns left, :---: centers and ---: aligns right. In this generator, pick the alignment from the menu above each column and the colons are added for you.

Can I paste a table from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Copy the cells, click the cell where the table should start, and paste. The grid grows to fit the pasted rows and columns.

Can a Markdown table cell contain a line break or a pipe?
A pipe must be escaped as \| and a line break written as <br>. The generator escapes pipes automatically.

Do Markdown tables support merged cells?
No. GitHub Flavored Markdown tables have no colspan or rowspan. If you need merged cells, use an HTML table inside the Markdown file.
